In "Night" by Elie Wiesel, Elie is develops a foot injury from working in the cold weather conditions for too long. He is sent to the infirmary, where he is treated for his injury. While he is in the process of healing, news arrives that "The Red Army was racing toward Buna: it was only a matter of hours." (p. 80) The Nazis decide that the best course of action would be to evacuate the camp, but leave the people in the infirmary. The people in the infirmary with Elie start discussing what will happen to them, theorizing that the Germans will probably blow the infirmary up in order to not leave any Jews. Elie has to decide between staying in the infirmary (his father would stay with him too), risking being destroyed by the Nazis, and evacuating with the rest of the healthy Jews. Elie decides to evacuate, but his injured foot causes him some problems. After the war, he learns that the people who stayed behind in the hospital were simply rescued by the Russians. Making choices like that is always tough, and Elie should have stuck with his original plan of staying in the infirmary.
If Elie had kept his faith in God, chances are that he would have chosen to stay in the infirmary. When making choices similar to this, it is hard to tell which option will be better in the long run. I believe that Elie should have had enough faith in God to stay in the infirmary. However, I can understand why he might not trust God anymore, after all he has put Elie through. Nothing matches that feeling of regret you get when you realize that you made the wrong decision, and it would have been much more beneficial for Elie to stay where he was in the hospital.
